Is it Possible to Predict Winning Lottery Numbers?

A lot of people assume that the only way to beat the odds is through sheer luck. While that's true, there are many ways you can become very successful at something with long odds against you.

The chances of winning the lottery are slim, but picking the right numbers can make for a profitable business. Large numbers of people pay to predict how big their winnings will be. In this article, we set out to see if it’s possible to predict winning lottery numbers by going over some of the probability theories on the lottery.

The Geometry of Probability

A Brazilian mathematician Renato Gianella mentioned in his study that not every combination in the lottery has the same drawing probability. In other words, some numbers are a bit more likely than other numbers—and that it’s quite possible to predict the underlying patterns. This is a big claim!

Renato’s theory asserts that winning combinations of numbers from the last few draws have comprehensible patterns that can tell us what combinations in the future are more probable.

If it's so simple, then why doesn’t everybody win a lottery? The truth is, you require a lot of knowledge of probability math and complex theories before you can predict a combination.

Avoid Low Figures

Sussex University’s math professor John Haigh has a different view—though, as you can guess, it’s still based on a theory of chance, called probability.

Professor John asserts that if we choose a combination of numbers that gives us a sum of 200, our probability of winning can rise significantly. It might sound absurd, but he backs it up with more theory.

Unlike mathematician Renato, Professor John assumes that each combination of numbers has the same probability of being drawn. However, he suggests that people need to ascertain which combination of number other people are likely to choose and then go for a completely different combination.

But how can it help us win? Theoretically, it doesn’t—but if our combination of the number is drawn eventually, it’ll help us win bigger. Because we chose the number that other people didn’t choose, there’s a now greater chance that we won’t be required to share the win with other lucky winners!
