A Brief History of Keno

Keno is a gambling game involving the use of cards or tickets with numbers written in small squares, ranging from one to eighty. The player circles as many numbers as they like up to the maximum limit, submits their ticket, and pays the amount due for their selection of numbers.

Daily, at regular intervals, a sum of twenty numbered balls or pellets are drawn randomly from a large container, and then the prizes are given out to the players if all or some of the numbers chosen by them match the lucky draw.

Origins of Keno

Keno has a historic Chinese origin that dates as far as two thousand years. The Chinese name for the game, initially, was pai-ko p’iao or baige piao which means “ticket of the white pigeon.” That was a reference to the betting game that involved tickets and white pigeons. From around the 3rd century BCE, games like baige piao were played in many Chinese provinces. The major gambling houses usually organized these gambling games in the provinces under the governor's supervision, who also had a profit share in all the proceedings.

The archetypal ticket that was initially used in baige piao, and is still widely used in contemporary Chinese communities where gambling is popular, represented the eighty characters of Qianziwen (The Book of Thousand Characters) rather than numbers.

This classic book of Chinese literature was written by an anonymous author and contained one-thousand Chinese characters. And the characters are so well-known in the Chinese tradition that they're sometimes used in place of numbers ranging from 1 to 1000.

Reception of Baige Piao in the West

Baige piao became popular as pak-a-pu in the West. It’s not only the ancestor of keno but also of widely popular lottery games of bingo and lotto. The advent of keno in the United States is dated in 1840 when Chinese immigrants came to Western America.

Around the start of the 1900s, Chinese gambling games became popular among Americans. The lottery games were initially referred to as Chinese lottery where the traditional Chinese characters were converted to numbers. Around this time, Baige Piao came to be known as keno.

Around 1933, keno gained popularity in the gambling houses of Nevada with names of racehorses in place of numbers to avoid the state laws against lotteries. Later in 1951, the state laws of Nevada were changed, and numbers were used in keno, as we see it today!
